Electoral College: The electoral college was created by the Constitution's 12th amendment and has the power of electing a president into office, without winning a majority vote. There are 538 electoral votes in the electoral college divided amongst the states; 100 senators plus 538 represenatatives. This represents the popular majority of votes, but less populated states are overrepresented. Each section of a state declares their presidential winner, and then the state counts each section's winner into the final pool of votes to determine an overall winner. For example lets say Teratoga has three districts to their state, district one had 5 votes Republican and 4 Democrat, that district would cast the Republican vote. Now district two has again 5 Republican and 4 Democrat, so district 2 would get the Republican vote. Now district three has 7 Democratic votes and 2 Republican votes, district three would cast a Democratic vote. So, Teratoga has two Republican votes and one Democratic vote, so they would vote Republican in the electoral college. Do you see how the Democrats still had more votes than the Republicans, yet the Republicans won because they are split into districts, this is how the Electoral College works.
